I'm such a joiner

In an effort to whip myself into shape, I have joined the 1 Month Challenge. I don't yet have a plan, but I'll work on that today. My goal is to increase my current level of fitness (measurable results TBD), tone my body (results measured by my mirror), and lose about 15 lbs* of fat.

The results will be posted here, tagged as "1monthchallenge".

Anyone else a joiner?

*ETA: Thanks to jen for pointing out that 15 lbs is a bit high for a 1 month goal. I completely agree and actually meant to indicate that 15 lbs is a longer term goal. I hope that whatever I accomplish during this 1 month challenge will put me on the right path, and will help me to lose those 15 lbs by mid-summer. That's about 3 months away and 1.25 lbs a week. Still a definite challenge for me.

good for you! can i just stick my nose in (as a fitness professional) to say that i think you are setting too high a goal to lose 15lbs in one month? you are not overfat enough to lose that amount of weight safely in a month. setting a goal of 2 lbs a week would be more reasonable and healthy.

you're completely right, jen. I wrote the post this morning and didn't clearly think through what I was writing. I don't actually expect to lose 15 lbs in a month. That's my ultimate goal, though not my goal for the end of this challenge. The 15 lb goal is perhaps a realistic goal for mid-summer.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm going to add a postscript!

Oh, I was thinking the same thing, and wondering if it was possible. Thanks Jen!

Mish! I will totally join you. I'm already following a vegan diet (of course!) and I've been back at exercising again (since I last talked to you about it, I realized my excuses were weak and I've been back at it!) so I've kinda already joined! But joining officially, I bet, could be fun/interesting.

I haven't been exercising at the gym, though I've thought about going to get a membership. I was just thinking today about this guy Robert who lives here, he's a vegan body builder/fitness guy, and just today I was thinking, I wonder how much it would cost for training? Maybe just for a little bit? I should ask him if that's something he'd do!

Anyway, I'm excited to hear about your progress! We shall support each other!

(Are you gonna track your calories? I've never done that before, and I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of the concept, but it might be useful to try. I think there are free programs that do that, right?)

Michelle - we posted at the same time!

Yay! A virtual fitness buddy who is already a friend!

I'm not sure I can commit to counting calories, fat, protein, etc. And I don't think I want to. I think that adds way too much to the process and could set a person up for failure. Instead, I'll keep on with the food logs and be conscious of what and how much I eat. And exer-muh-cise will become much more of a priority as I feel I don't eat that badly to begin with.

Are you talking about the infamous Robert Cheeke? :)

I also like the thought of joining a gym since all the equipment is there and when you're at a gym you're not so distracted. But, really, it costs a lot. And you can get the same amount of exercise for free by walking, jogging, finding a tall set of stairs, lunges, workout videos that you already own, etc. As for weight training, small free weights don't cost too much, and you can even use canned tomatoes in a pinch!

I will definitely support you. Let me know how I can help, even if it is just to be someone you are accountable to!

I'm a joiner too! I joined a raw food challenge and another get-your-sh*t-together blog, but I'm not organized yet! I go to the Y and it does get expensive, plus there's all the carrying-gym-clothes-around that I don't like.

oh good! i don't really want to count the calories, either! that is really my only hesitation, so i'm in!

at home, i do workout videos, and i rotate them: one one day, the other the other day. they have bits of aerobic and then strength training and weights. i've got dumb bells in 4 sizes and i'm not ready to grow out of them for quite a while! i'm satisfied working out at home, but at the same time, i do have definite curiosities about the idea of working out with someone else and how that might challenge me, etc.

having someone to be accountable to is rad! i like to sneak food when no ones' looking, though the past few days i haven't done that.

yep, the infamous! i met him and ran him into him a couple times and he's always really nice.

i like the idea of letting my mirror/clothes tell me what's up then one of those fat pinchers or whatever. i'm wearing a shirt today that was too tight in the arms last time i tried it on!

i am also trying to lose fat and eat healthier, though i can't commit to specific goals right now. i will commit to actually completing my food log daily for the 1 month challenge though.

if anyone wants ideas on cheap ways to work out at home, let me know. i'm always a big fan of exercise bands for home workout because they are so much more versatile than weights (or canned tomatos) and also cheaper and take less room to store. you can buy medical tubing at a medical supply store for super extra cheap - it's the same thing! also don't forget push ups and pull ups -- two of the most effective exercises you can do and you don't need a gym.

jen - thanks for suggesting the bands. Coincidentally, I was talking with the boy about them last week. Do you find they work well?
